John Levers

John Stewart Levers, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on June 20, 2021, at the Jane & Bill Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, FL after a prolonged fight against cancer. John was born on March 29, 1947, in Easton, PA to the late A.F. Levers and Mildred Levers (Stewart). He was raised on Lafayette Street in College Hill and graduated from Easton Area High School in 1965. Upon graduation, John began working as a lineman’s assistant for Bell of Pennsylvania, until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He served his country faithfully before being honorably discharged in 1968 and returning to work for Bell of PA in Easton. On November 7, 1970, he married the love of his life Judy, and moved to Harrisburg in 1972. He continued to work for Bell of PA, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies through their mergers while relocating to State College, PA from 1975-85, Easton, PA from 1985-88, and finally landing in Jacksonville, FL in 1988. During his 33 years there he lived in Mandarin, Amelia Island, and finally Fernandina Beach. John was a direct descendant of Robert Levers, who read the Declaration of Independence in the Easton circle on July 8, 1776, after its signing. John was called upon to re-enact the reading in the circle in 1980, an achievement he discussed with great pride. He developed an early love of cars and planes, making trips to local drag strips in PA towing his own race vehicle to races before he had an actual driver’s license. That would bloom into a love of NASCAR, and he and Judy took many trips to experience on track driving experiences in Daytona, Talladega, Atlanta, and others. John got both his pilot’s license and pilot instructor’s license in the early 70’s, and taught students for several years. He spent most summers flying his family and relatives to summer vacations at the Tropical Manor in Daytona Beach, FL in his 1955 Piper Apache. Upon moving to State College, John became a PADI certified scuba instructor and taught classes at Penn State University. When he was not enjoying those recreational activities with his family, he could usually be found working on something for his business Mr. Fixzit of Jacksonville, which he proudly ran for almost 20 years. Most recently, Mr. Levers worked in the IT Department for the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. John was a Jaguars season ticket holder from 1997-current and made the trip to London in 2018 to root on the Jags and was a volunteer during Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Sea Ray Club of Jax with their boat “R Paradise”, also serving as the Commodore of the club in 2005 and 2006. John was also a member of Amelia Cruisers Auto Club and Auto Legends, where he enjoyed showing off his 2007 Corvette and 1989 Firebird. John was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach. He was an avid boater, fisherman, and for many years competed in both the Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach Kingfish Tournaments with his best fishing buddy Dell Thompson. John also loved traveling around the U.S. and abroad with his family. John is survived by his wife of 50+ years, Judy Levers of Fernandina Beach, FL; his sons, Bill Levers of Los Angeles, CA and Jeff Levers of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren, Braden Levers of Los Angeles, CA and Ashlyn Coringrato (Clayton) of Gainesville, FL; brother, Robert Levers of Easton, PA; sister, Barbara Possessky (Frank) of Narvon, PA; sister in-law, Janice Levers of Escondido, CA; sister-in law, Brenda Cutrona of Easton, PA; seven nieces and four nephews.
