Charles Bartish

Passed On: December 1 2016

Charles M. Bartish of Bethlehem, the loving husband and best friend of Joanne (Campbell) Bartish for 47 years, passed away peacefully on December 1, at St. Luke's Hospice. Born in Easton, he was the only son of the late A. Charles and Justina Y. Bartish. A 1965 graduate of Easton Area High School, he went on to receive a B.S. in chemistry from Villanova University in 1969, and a Ph.D. in inorganic/organometallic chemistry from Lehigh University in 1973. Charlie enjoyed a distinguished 36-year career with Air Products. Initially recruited as a research chemist, his talents were quickly recognized, and he was appointed as a research manager for the company's Chemicals Division. In 1993 he assumed responsibility for product safety for the Chemicals Division and in 2000 was appointed as Air Product's Global Director of Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs. Throughout his career Charlie generously donated his time, knowledge, and expertise to various organizations and trade associations. He chaired task forces in the Society of the Plastics Industry and was active on the National Paint and Coatings Association's Product Stewardship Committee. Charlie was a member of the Lehigh Valley section of the American Chemical Society for 48 years, serving on various technical and creative innovation committees. He also represented Air Products on key committees and task forces at the Compressed Gas Association. He served on the Editorial Advisory Board for Chemtech Magazine and the Advisory Board to the chemical technology program at Lehigh-Carbon Community College. Charlie retired in 2009. At his retirement celebration, people from throughout his career fondly recounted his numerous contributions and successes, and expressed their admiration for their time working with Charlie. He was highly respected by his co-workers and managers, and beloved by his staff for his leadership and humor. Charlie was an avid golfer and member of Silver Creek Country Club, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He and his family were long-time members of the Northwest Swim Club of Bethlehem, of which Charlie is also a past President. In addition to golf he was an ardent Photographer, Woodworker, Marksman, and enjoyed horseback riding and college basketball. Survivors: In addition to his loving wife Joanne, Charlie is survived by his daughter Jennifer, wife of Colonel Steven P. Brodfuehrer USMC (ret) of Lexington Park MD, son Charles of Seekonk MA, 3 grandchildren Josie, Gunnar and Garrett, his Sister Jane Spencer and husband John of Vergennes VT, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services: Friends and Family may visit on Monday December 5, 6-9 pm and Tuesday Morning 10-11am at Connell Funeral Home 245 East Broad Street Bethlehem PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2016 at 12 pm Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church 1861 Catasauqua Road Bethlehem Pa. Interment will follow the Mass at Holy Savior Cemetery.
